Commitment to achieving Net Zero

Recognising that climate change poses a threat to the economy, nature and society-at-large, our company commits to take action immediately in order to:

  1. Halve our greenhouse gas emissions before 2030

  2. Achieve net zero emissions before 2050

  3. Disclose our progress on a yearly basis

We have made the SME Climate Commitment. In doing so, we are proud to be recognised by the United Nations Race to Zero campaign, and join governments, businesses, cities, regions, and universities around the world that share the same mission[1].

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions.

Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

This is our first year in recording our emissions footprint therefore the baseline provided below is also our first reporting period of current emissions. In subsequent years we will provide an annual report of current emissions against the baseline set below.

No emissions are calculated under Scope 3.

The business is a social research consultancy and a micro business and does not purchase or sell any tangible products that require any transport or distribution (categories 4 and 9) or require waste disposal or treatment (category 5) under the definitions of these categories.

No eligible business travel was undertaken during the baseline period due to the pandemic (category 6) This is likely to increase in future reporting periods when normal work requirements resume. Travel conducted in vehicles owned or controlled by the organisation have been reported upon under Scope 1.

All employees for the company work from home, therefore there is no employee commuting from homes to work sites (category 7)

Current Emissions Reporting

As this is our first year, the figures reported below are the same as those in the baseline year above. We will report annually in January on the data for the previous year.

Our 2022 emissions will therefore be reported upon in January 2023.

No emissions are calculated under Scope 3.

Emissions reduction targets

In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to 21,255 kgCO2e by 2026.

This is a reduction of 25%

Carbon Reduction Projects

In the future we intend to implement further measures such as:

  • Updating our company vision and mission statement to ensure it reflects our commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions

  • All future company vehicles purchased for use by employees to be either hybrid or electric

  • Becoming a Climate Positive Workforce and offsetting our emissions to achieve carbon neutrality

  • Switching to renewable energy tariffs for office energy

  • Utilising public transport for all possible journeys

  • Continuing to work on becoming a paperless office by making full utilisation of cloud facilities and online communication channels

  • Continuing to work from home post Covid-19 pandemic, thus reducing emissions from unnecessary commuting

  • Implementing an ‘online first’ approach to meetings and interviews conducted as part of the core work of the company

  • Implementing a ‘local first’ approach to the purchasing of all goods and services

  • Moving towards a needs-based, resource-efficient circular model that reduces, reuses, and recycles materials

  • Changing to LED lighting or energy-saving lightbulbs in all offices

  • Providing personal carbon footprint analysis and advice for all employees

  • Investing in more energy efficient technology for offices including setting green procurement requirements for all new laptops, monitors and other technology
